Like me, you probably have questions when it comes to organic produce…including the all-important: “Is it worth the extra money?”
I recently had a very pleasant and informative chat with Ellie Krieger (host of the Food Network show Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger, nutritionist, and author extraordinaire) about this very subject.
EATING ORGANIC TIP #1:
First and foremost Ellie reminded me that, contrary to what many people might think, eating organic is not an all or nothing proposition. You can eat some organic and some not, and still help your health and the environment. When I asked which foods were better to eat in the organic form, Ellie suggested that food you peel, such a carrot, would be fine in the non-organic form, as you would not eat the outside of it anyway. With foods you are eating whole, organic is the way to go. Apples and berries are great examples of this.
EATING ORGANIC TIP #2:
Ellie also brought up how kids seem to go on “food jags,” where they eat tons of the same food for weeks or months at a time. If a child is eating large quantities of a food, it is good to buy organic, if possible.
EATING ORGANIC TIP #3:
Last but certainly not least, Ellie says she loves pre-washed organic greens, especially spinach, which she often adds to pasta sauce. She is also fond of the organic lunch packs, which can be found in most grocery stores. Buying organic produce locally is another great suggestion from Ellie. This way you support your community while eliminating the middleman, so you save money.
Now that you’re armed with advice from an expert, you’ll be all set to make the best organic produce choices next time you hit the grocery store. Ellie is glad to help!
